sikhona – I am here to be seen

Designed and woven by Gun-Marie Nalsen 2024

Tapestry

Hand dyed wool , in different shades and polyester yarn as a weft on a blue yarn as warp

Mounted on a bamboo stick with linen yarn as a hanging

13″ x 23″

It was fun to weave this tapestry, because I had a specific a pallette of colors. I just worked without really thinking how it was going to be (as usual) . The result is good, I like it! Using different materials is fun.

I chose the name that sounded nice in the Zulu language, from South Africa, that means “I am here to be seen”. I think it is appropriate!

The sea again! I love felting the sea. It is nice to see it from inside a house through a window, so the cat was peeping at my seashore!

It was so much fun to invent the flowers! As usual I just go with the flow to see what is going to happen, and there it is! I think that the name is good!

Sketches and paintings

Just experimenting on different techniques, it is fun.

Making collages, using watercolors, gouaches, pencils, watercolors pens, markers is amazing so much you can do!

studying the sunsets at the beach

Gouaches and watercolors paintings

The first four are gouaches and some ink. The fifth is watercolors and white gouache.

It is so much fun to paint beaches, and sunsets are so interesting to try to reproduce the photo what you see. I think they came out good! They are 4″ x 4″ and are in my little sketchbook.

Framed

Fall is in! I could not resist to make this piece when I saw a picture of a river in the back with the fall colors in the front. It was really fun to make this one, playing with all the reds and greens that I had.

Magnets in the back

I found these small “rococo” frames and decided to needle felt of course the sea, two different ones and a vase with flowers. It was so much fun to work so small. It took more time than I thought, but the result is good I think, They have magnets in the back to decorate the kitchen of somebody!

Another needle felted piece that I made to take to the Show and Sale of the Handweavers of Bucks County, this November. Flowers always flowers…it is so joyfully to invent the shapes of them, and always have a blue vase because it reminds me my Mom.

Fall is the most beautiful season of the year. The colors are incredible. The yellows, reds and oranges are

everywhere and on the ground the rugs of colors replicate the above ones. It is so nice to sit down and felt these scenes.
