The touareg are a nomadic pastoralist tribe that means ” free people{. They live in in the central Sahara region.

I started to work with the wool roving, and suddenly, the Touareg appeared, After that I decided to hook the

dunes of the desert where they live. It was a very interesting experience to try to make the sand dynes. I

enjoyed it throughly!!

traces of red

Designed and woven by Gun-Marie Nalsen 2021

Tapestry

Hand dyed wool yarn, hand dyed sari silk yarn and hand dyed wool roving on a cotton warp

Mounted on an vintage stick

10″ x 13″

When I start to weave in my small tapestry loom, I don’t know what is going to happen. I choose the colors I want to use and go. My hands are the ones that move the wool. The red strip of wool roving gives it more character. I like the result. It is a bit square, but it came out like that! I am happy with it.

The idea of making a multicolored turtle came when Teresa Nieberding asked me to make an animal for her show “ON THE WILD SIDE”, that is going to be in September, 2021, in Cincinnati, OH. It was so much fun to design it and think in colors. I hope that she likes it!
